Learning how to knit has historically been an important hand-skill for New Zealand children that at surface value provided a means of crafting clothing or other items, but the underlying benefits were entirely cognitive. The left and right hand is required to perform different functions hence this action 'awakens' the correlating parts of the brain, concentration and focus is required to learn and follow the 4-step sequence of 'through' 'round ' back' 'off', then repeat this enough times to imbed the learning until it becomes a sub-conscious action.
Children who learn to knit go on a journey of experiences including patience, perseverance, problem-solving, acceptance and pride. They receive a huge sense of personal satisfaction and a boost to their self-esteem. They learn the importance of fixing mistakes in the moment and understanding that mistakes don't usually go away!
There is a huge amount of research that has studied the direct correlation between learning a fine motor skill such as knitting, and the benefits to numeracy and literacy skills.
